SitusAMC Europe Pro: Matthew Bailey

Name: Matthew Bailey
Office: London, UK
Title: Senior Vice President, Loan Asset Management

Who are your clients and what’s the top benefit they receive by working with SitusAMC?

While there are opportunities with domestic lenders, we tend to work with non-domestic clients. Big local banks in any market are happy to staff up and have their own full-service operations. But when we talk to non-domestic banks, and to a much greater extent, non-bank lenders, they tend to run things in a more lean way. That's where the opportunities tend to come up, where we can slot in and help them in a way that's a bit more flexible.

Describe some of the key ways SitusAMC augments the internal capabilities of clients?

My primary client has a large, diverse real estate loan book, and their team does origination and execution as well as asset management. I think one of the things they appreciate is having people on site and available who are just focused on the asset management side of things, and that's something that we can come in and do flexibly. We can be very responsive as they grow their book. They can add more resource through our team much more efficiently than going through an internal recruitment process directly. I think they appreciate that.

We also have people who've worked across the market, and because I work with other clients, including other banks, funds and insurance companies, I can give clients access to a wider experience base and different perspectives on the market than what they’d find internally. Their staff can't go out and have conversations with other banks and other funds, but we can discuss market trends and the ways people are responding and bring insights to them directly.

What is most fulfilling about your job?

What's interesting for me at this stage of my career is seeing how things continually change. The industry is different than it was even 10 or 15 years ago, where we now have lots of non-bank lenders, like insurance companies and private equity funds. They interact with banks in ways that didn't happen years ago, so you have deals where insurance companies and private equity firms lend to funds that then make the direct loans to sponsors. So that means that, sitting right here, I get to see quite a wide range of things. I see all sorts of new activity that I didn't see earlier in my career. That's what makes things interesting and makes me excited to keep coming to work.
